Tesco Bank has appointed Gary Balmer as its new chief information officer (CIO).
Based in its Edinburgh headquarters, and reporting to chief operations officer David Bowerman, he will be responsible for leading the bank’s 440-strong information technology function.
Balmer previously worked in various IT leadership roles at New Look, Sainsbury's, PwC and IBM.
He joins a growing CIO division, with 140 new roles recently announced across Edinburgh (100) and Newcastle (40). The appointment follows the retirement of previous CIO, Derek Tucker.
Bowerman commented: “Our focus as a business is developing propositions which better meet the needs of Tesco shoppers, and Gary will play a key role in leading the technology function which supports the delivery of this.”
Balmer added: “I am pleased to be joining such a well-recognised brand and look forward to working alongside my new colleagues to ensure we provide the best possible service for Tesco Bank customers.”
