The Post Office has signed a new five-year agreement with 30 UK bank brands and building societies to ensure that cash is available in local communities until December 2030.
The company said it is the longest agreement it has ever signed, underlining the importance of having access to cash banking services at Post Office branches.
Under the Banking Framework 4 deal, customers can withdraw and deposit cash, make balance enquiries and deposit cheques face-to-face with their local postmaster.
According to its December data, Post Office handled over 163 million cash transactions in 2025, with over 14.5 million transactions made in December 2025 alone.
Last year, Post Office said it experienced record-breaking months for cash transactions in its branches, with July seeing the highest volume of cash transactions at Post Office branches on record.
The total volume of cash transactions increased by eight per cent in December 2025, compared to December 2024.
Its data also shows that over four per cent more transactions were handled by Post Office branches in 2025, compared to 2024.
Ben Hunter Woollard, head of banking at Post Office, said that the UK is far from becoming a cashless society.
“Post offices provide one stop shops for many essential services with millions of people and local businesses relying on cash every day,” he continued. “Post Office remains committed to supporting people and businesses to access the cash they need to help them, and local high streets thrive.”
With over 11,500 branches, Post Office claims it has the biggest retail network in the UK, with more branches than all the banks and building societies in the nation combined.
In December last year, Post Office announced had signed a new five-year agreement with Cash Access UK to continue operating Banking Hubs across the UK.
Post Office, which already operates 200 Banking Hubs across the UK, said it would play a key role in the government’s plans to increase the number of banking hubs to 350 by the end of the current parliament.
Banking Hubs are shared banking facilities operated by the Post Office in partnership with major UK banks and funded by Cash Access UK
