Amazon working on ‘pay by wave’ tech

Amazon is working with Visa to develop a contactless biometric identification system to let customers to pay by waving their hands through a scanner.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the e-commerce giant is working with Visa, and is in discussions with MasterCard, to test its hand scanner terminals, which will digitally map a shopper’s hand, link it to their credit card and allow them to pay with a wave.

Amazon is also understood to have approached JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Synchrony Financial, although these firms were apparently cautious of collaborating until they can determine the details of the partnership.

The new technology is being designed for roll-out in the growing estate of Amazon Go stores. Reports suggested that issues surrounding security and shopper’s reluctance to hand over yet more personal data are still being worked through in the early stages of development.

An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment any further.
