Klarna adds AI shopping and revamps finance management

Klarna has announced the addition of an AI-powered shopping feed to its app in its spring product update.

The Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) provider’s new personalised discovery shopping feed, which runs on an AI capability Klarna developed in-house, helps assist customers in finding and reselling.

Continuing its diversification beyond BNPL, Klarna said its shopping feed also updates in real time and becomes increasingly tailored over time as the AI system learns more about user preferences.

Other changes announced by Klarna include an overhaul of its app with the aim to further simplify finance management and shopping functionality. The redesign segments different service provisions within the app into five separate Shop, Purchases, In-Store, Budget and You tabs.

“Our new AI powered discovery shopping feed is the next evolution of the Klarna app becoming the starting point for every purchase,” said Klarna co-founder and chief executive Sebastian Siemiatkowski. “This builds on a ton of initiatives we’re working on in the AI space, to provide a greater level of personalisation to consumers that was once thought impossible.”

Under a separate AI initiative, Klarna also announced that it has partnered with OpenAI to bring curated product recommendations to users who ask ChatGPT for shopping advice and inspiration, via a plugin.
