Santander hires Apple exec for payments push

Banco Santander has appointed former Apple executive Trish Burgess as its new global head of peer-to-peer (P2P) payments.

In this newly created role, she will lead the strategy and deployment of P2P payments worldwide, tasked with building usage across Santander’s global footprint.

Trish Burgess joins the bank from Apple, where she was providing direction for the launch of Apple Card, in conjunction with Apple’s and Goldman Sachs’ product, engineering, marketing and operations teams. She also expanded the global launch of Apple Pay in Europe and Asia, enabling e-commerce platforms, and increased Apple Pay’s reach to hundreds of thousands of merchants.

At Apple, Burgess assisted with the launch of the tech giant's new credit card with Goldman Sachs and worked on the roll out of Apple Pay in Europe and Asia.

Reporting to Santander Digital Payments global head Chirag Patel, she will become part of a team which includes banking and technology executives from companies including Google, Amazon, PayPal, Facebook and Netflix, based in Madrid, London and Silicon Valley.

Patel commented: “We know that innovation is powered by the most talented people, and we welcome Trish’s wealth of payment experience.

"Her fresh thinking is invaluable to the team as we forge ahead with our ambition to responsibly serve the financial needs of one billion potential customers and businesses in Europe and the Americas.”

Last April, Santander pledged €20 billion investment in digital technology over the next four years, with payments identified as the cornerstone of a new open financial services platform.
