Refinitiv appoints new CTO

Refinitiv has announced the appointment of Alex Cesar as its chief technology officer, reporting to chief information officer Phil Wellard.

She will lead the software engineering teams that build, operate and innovate the firm’s strategic data platforms and the core requirements that underpin them.

The promotion comes two years after Cesar joined Refinitiv from Deutsche Bank. In that time, she has spearheaded the growth of the company’s risk business as its global technology head, before moving to lead the technology group building the Refinitiv Data Platform.

Prior to Deutsche Bank, Cesar held global positions at a number of banks, including JP Morgan, Standard Chartered, Barclays and Morgan Stanley.

As a signatory of the Women in Finance Charter, Refinitiv has committed to reaching 40 per cent female representation in senior leadership roles globally by 2020. The senior leadership of its technology organisation is now comprised of 50 per cent women.

Wellard commented: “Alex knows the industry very well and I’m delighted this appointment shows we are committed to removing obstacles that inhibit women from advancing a career in technology.”

Earlier this week, Refinitiv added new digital tools for wealth portals, letting firms further customise capabilities to improve user experience.

The company stated that it will continue to expand the suite of widgets available in the coming year, including the release of one displaying new content services such as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data.
