Bottlepay launches bitcoin payments on Twitter

Bottlepay has launched new service which enables users to send and receive bitcoin instantly via Twitter.

The UK-based digital payments app, which launched last month, is the first platform to offer bitcoin payments via social media.

A single tweet, i.e. ‘@bottlepay send 1,000 sats (the smallest unit of bitcoin) to @twitteruser,’ will instantly move the cryptocurrency from one user’s account to another.

The company said that unlike other digital payment platforms, such as PayPal and Revolut, whose users can’t currently spend or withdraw their bitcoin, Bottlepay lets users “withdraw, deposit or spend their bitcoin on tangible goods anywhere in the world.”

The online platform plans to expand its bitcoin payment service to Reddit, Discord, Twitch, Telegram, and Mastodon.

According to the app, since it launched in February, users have made total transactions of more than £1.7 million.

“Empowering users to make instant payments on social media takes us a step closer to revolutionising the global payments infrastructure,” said Mark Webster, chief executive, Bottlepay. “Today’s consumers want the power to move their money immediately, from anywhere in the world. Bottlepay’s social bitcoin payments are a much-needed update on the clunky, outdated payment systems available up until now, and a leap towards smoother, easier transactions.”
