BBVA overhauls banking app to offer AI personalisation and finance coach

BBVA has overhauled its banking app for customers in Spain, using AI to offer savings incentives, financial education and personalisation.

The Spanish bank said the move will enable customers to organise the app in different ways according to their habits, with the level of personalisation so advanced that they can use Apple Intelligence tech to create a personalised design for their cards in the digital environment of the BBVA app.

This feature will soon be available exclusively for Visa cards and those with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 phones.

BBVA said the new app contains an updated version of its virtual AI-powered assistant, called Blue, which can answer customer questions with natural language.

Additionally, an AI coach analyses the customer’s financial situation and suggests specific steps they can take to help improve their personal finances.

The coach makes an initial assessment of the customer’s income, expenses, savings and loans and identifies opportunities for improvement such as reducing expenses or setting savings goal.

The bank says the app is around six times faster than the previous version and comes with an integrated wallet, which customers can use to access their cards or send instant payments to frequent contacts.

The bank added that it has installed a new discreet mode automatically hides account balances and transactions to “prevent prying eyes.”

“2025 marks the start of a new strategic cycle for BBVA, in which we have committed to incorporate a customer perspective into everything we do in a radical way,” said chief executive Onur Genç. “This new app is a clear example of this. Every customer will have their own version of the app.”
