More than 700,000 London bus fares have been paid for by contactless since TfL rolled it out in December. And an average of 11,000 of these bus fare transactions are taking place every day.
Forty five per cent of these have been made via Barclays and Barclaycard cards. Barclaycard also provided the technology to enable TfL’s fleet of more than 9,000 buses to accept this method of payment across the capital.
According to TfL’s website, London’s buses carry more than six million passengers each weekday. Whilst, as of late 2012, 85,000 plus bus journeys were still paid for using cash each day, so the contactless figures are hardly earth-shattering. Nonetheless, with around 31 million contactless credit, debit and charge cards in circulation in the UK, it is expected that usage will increase, with up to 25 million contactless bus journeys to be made across the capital by the end of 2013. TfL is also making the payment method available for travel on London Underground, DLR, London Overground and trams before year end.
