Starling appoints head of retail banking

Starling Bank has appointed Helen Bierton, a former Olympic archer and Santander executive, as its new head of retail banking.

Bierton, who represented Great Britain in the Athens Olympics in 2004, will join the digital challenger bank from Santander, where she has worked since 2007, rising to her current role as director of products at Santander Business UK.

She has previously held product, pricing and strategy roles at Alliance & Leicester and NatWest.

Bierton, 44, is credited with launching the first digital mortgage application and the first high interest current account in the UK.

With responsibility for developing Starling’s retail banking business, she will be tasked with growing the bank’s customer base as it looks to expand its UK operations.

Anne Boden, founder and chief executive of Starling Bank, said: “Adding someone of Helen’s calibre is a great endorsement, she has an impressive track record in retail banking and understands the importance of doing things differently for customers.”
