RBS has said it will compensate customers who faced problems with online, phone banking, cash withdrawals and debit card payments this week. This came less than a year after a computer meltdown caused chaos for millions of its customers.
The latest IT glitch started Wednesday evening and was resolved by the early hours of Thursday morning. RBS and Ulster Bank customers also experienced problems. RBS has blamed a computer malfunction, although it has yet to give further details. "We are disappointed that our customers have faced disruption to banking services for a period this evening, and apologise for that," NatWest posted on Twitter. But by that point hundreds of customers had taken to the social networking site to voice their frustration. (Sample Tweet: "@Natwest_Help Help? Really? So why not a single word about tonight’s fiasco? Great to know you’re there for your customers.")
Last summer a failure of RBS systems to properly update customers' balances overnight meant customers were unable to use their cards or move money for days, weeks in some cases. RBS had to pay out millions in compensation as a result.
