NatWest hit by another IT glitch

NatWest has apologised for technical problems which left many customers unable to use online and phone banking and make cash withdrawals and debit card payments. This came less than a year after a computer meltdown caused chaos for millions of RBS, Ulster Bank and NatWest customers.

The latest IT glitch started Wednesday evening and was resolved by the early hours of Thursday morning. RBS and Ulster Bank customers also experienced problems. "We are disappointed that our customers have faced disruption to banking services for a period this evening, and apologise for that," NatWest posted on Twitter. But by that point hundreds of customers had taken to the social networking site to voice their frustration. (Sample Tweet: "@Natwest_Help Help? Really? So why not a single word about tonight’s fiasco? Great to know you’re there for your customers.")

Last summer a failure of RBS systems to properly update customers' balances overnight meant many were unable to use their cards, move or receive money for days, weeks in some cases. RBS Group had to pay out millions in compensation as a result.
