Mondo turns to Thames on debit card deal

Startup ‘mobile-first’ bank Mondo is working with Thames Card Technology to roll out contactless debit cards coupled with personalisation technology.

The challenger bank, currently going through the process of acquiring its banking licence, will offer customers a contactless debit card coupled with a mobile banking app featuring intelligent notifications, instant balance information and financial management features. The first 2,000 alpha cards are in circulation already, being used as part of the pilot of the bank’s services. A further 4,000 are expected to be commissioned over the next two months.

“More consumers want instant access to their accounts and no longer see the need to visit bricks and mortar branches,” said Tom Blomfield, founder and CEO at Mondo. “We wanted to offer a personal, transparent and easy to use banking service, and Thames is helping us to achieve this. They have helped us to bring together a range of innovative features, such as the ability to block and unblock your payment card instantly, which we have specifically designed for those of us who are prone to misplacing it.”

In March, Mondo raised £1 million in 96 seconds on crowdfunding site Crowdcube, part of the bank’s campaign to raise £6 million in finance.
