Gmail for Android has unveiled a feature which allows users to send, request and receive money from their contacts directly from the Gmail app.
Google Wallet has been integrated into Gmail since 2013, but customers had to access the service via an online browser.
The new addition to the mobile app also allows users to exchange money with anyone – not just people using a Gmail email address. Furthermore, recipients can configure their account so that the money they receive goes directly into their bank account.
The feature sits in the ‘add attachment’ option of an email message, allowing users to enter how much money they would like to send or request from the email recipient and choose a payment method. A ‘claim money’ button will appear in the recipient’s email and the money will be automatically transferred into their Google Wallet account.
The mobile feature is currently available in the US only.
