Equinix to build £90m UK data centre

Data infrastructure firm Equinix is pumping £90 million into an upgrade of its data centre in London to keep up with demand from the UK’s digital economy.

The new International Business Exchange Centre will be built at Equinix’s existing London Slough campus. Equinix said the new centre will provide the increasing data infrastructure needed by City firms to support IT transformation initiatives and increasing adoption of cloud-based technologies.

The data centre - called LD7 - is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2019 and will bring Equinix’s UK portfolio to 12 International Business Exchanges, comprised of 200 data centres in 52 markets.

The company said the investment signalled its confidence in London’s ongoing future as Europe’s financial hub, regardless of the outcome of the UK’s Brexit negotiations.

The data centre will enable Equinix customers to connect securely with more than 1,000 businesses in London, including capital markets participants, insurers and electronic payments firms, as well as 200 network service providers and 275 cloud and IT service providers.

Russell Poole, UK managing director at Equinix, said: "London is one of the most important connection points in the world and we expect this growth to continue as the City continues to play a crucial role in powering the global digital economy.”
