The top-level domain name .bank is now available and has already seen 4,000 applications from the financial services industry, according to CentralNic FinTech.
The company, one of the official registrars for .bank, said that the new web address – reserved exclusively for eligible financial institutions – would provide an alternative to .com and .co.uk that would make internet services more secure.
CentralNic CEO Ben Crawford said: “As the internet becomes increasingly vital for the global banking industry, the .bank top-level domain addresses a number of urgent needs. By making it easier for consumers and search engines to distinguish legitimate bank websites, the .bank designation will help combat online fraud, improve consumer protection and simultaneously reduce the burden of security costs for the banking community.”
.bank is being managed by fTLD Registry Services, the private company owned, operated and governed by a coalition of banks, insurance companies and their respective trade associations. It has also been endorsed by the European Banking Authority and other international banking federations.
