Mastercard is to launch contactless services at ATMs which will allow users to securely withdraw cash without entering a PIN number.
The payment services giant said that users will be able to access services using just their phones.
To offer the service, Mastercard has partnered with Polish ATM services company ITCARD and technology firm NCR Atleos.
Multiple countries in Europe including Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Austria have already deployed contactless ATMs.
However, in these countries users are still prompted to enter their PIN when using their mobile phone in addition to authenticating themselves via mobile wallet using biometrics.
Mastercard said that its Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM) streamlines this process by verifying a cardholder’s identity using a mobile device for contactless payments.
The consumer authenticates themselves on their phone before tapping the ATM to start their transaction.
Mastercard said its new service aligns the user experience across devices, reducing the need for verification of both CDCVM and online PIN on a single ATM transaction for a truly digital-first experience.
According to initial testing carried out by Mastercard in July, contactless ATM transactions using CDCVM are on average over 20 per cent faster than those requiring PIN.
The company said that the move comes as many people embrace a digital-first lifestyle by leaving physical wallets and bank cards at home.
CDCVM at ATMs are currently being piloted in Poland, with Mastercard expecting the service to be available in all markets by 2026.
“This breakthrough marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the consumer experience,” said Johan Gerber, EVP, head of security solutions at Mastercard. “By enabling biometric mobile authentication at ATMs, we are redefining the consumer experience, simplifying it without sacrificing security.
“Together with our partners, we are making everyday financial interactions safe and more intuitive for everyone.”
