Klarna has rolled out a new in-app security feature designed to help customers verify whether they are genuinely speaking to the Swedish FinTech.
The new Call Status Detection tool is now live for Klarna customers in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, allowing users to check the authenticity of incoming calls within the Klarna app.
When customers receive a phone call from someone claiming to represent Klarna, they can open the app and view a banner at the top of the screen. A green banner confirms the call has been verified by Klarna, while an amber banner indicates the company cannot verify the caller, which prompts customers to end the conversation.
The feature adds to Klarna's existing inbox verification service, which enables customers to confirm whether emails, text messages and letters claiming to be from the company are legitimate. It is also comparable to similar offerings from neobanks including Monzo and Revolut.
The move comes as authorised push payment and impersonation scams continue to grow across Europe, with fraudsters increasingly spoofing caller IDs to appear as trusted banks or payment providers. According to the European Central Bank, fraudsters steal more than €4 billion from consumers across Europe every year.
Klarna said the rollout forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen fraud prevention by giving customers simple tools to distinguish legitimate communications from increasingly sophisticated social engineering attacks.
The company added that additional regional launches are planned, although no timeline has been announced.
“Scammers are getting more sophisticated and we want to do everything we can to help consumers fight back,” said Woody Malouf, head of financial crime at Klarna. “Adding Call Status Detection to our existing Inbox feature gives consumers an easy and quick way to verify what's real and keep their money safe.”
