Visa predicts contactless tipping point

Visa has predicted that 20 million contactless cards will be in circulation in the UK by the end of 2011. This increase comes on the back of several major retailer roll-outs this year, with McDonald’s leading the charge.

The number of Visa contactless cards in circulation passed the 13 million mark in March this year. Barclays Group, Bank of America and Lloyds Banking Group and The Royal Bank of Scotland Group are among the UK banks issuing cards. Mark Austin, head of contactless at Visa Europe, comments: “Contactless payments are building to a genuine tipping point due to a combination of critical factors - more banks are issuing cards, major retailers such as McDonald’s are adopting the technology, and contactless travel infrastructure through Transport for London is being realised - with London buses being contactless enabled in 2012. London 2012 is another major factor, where many more consumers will have the opportunity to experience contactless payments at the Games.”
