App-less HSBC falls behind

HSBC is one of the few top brands without a presence on an app store, according to a new survey.

The 2011 Top 100 Global Brands and Their App Store Status, released by Distimo, found that 91 of the Interbrand best brands have an app on the Apple, Android or another platform, compared to 51 per cent 18 months ago. The iPhone is the most popular format, with 86 per cent of companies having at least one application available on the platform. The Android store is next (59 per cent) and the least popular store is Nokia, with nine companies having an offering on the system.

The average number of applications from each company is 24, while brands with the most applications include Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft and Google. Nine per cent do not publish in any app store, including HSBC, Kleenex and Burberry.
