Contactless ATM operation hits Spain

ICT-based business solutions provider Fujitsu and leading Spanish financial operator la Caixa have installed the world’s first ATMs to feature contactless technology.

The machines allow customers to quickly and easily carry out routine financial transactions – contactless cards can be held next to the reader rather than being inserted into the ATM card slot, enter their PIN number and operate the ATM.

The ATMs were first installed in a district of Barcelona, in Sitges and central Palma.

Further ATMs will be installed at other locations around the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, while a range of compatible services and functions will also be extended.

The innovation was designed to make ATM transactions faster and more convenient for users, and makes la Caixa the first financial institutions to roll-out commercial services using contactless technology, representing further progress in the bank’s commitment to identifying innovative technology to improve the services provided to customers.

The ATMs are also adapted to work with all existing contactless payment methods, including NFC-enabled mobile phones.

Visa Europe and la Caixa recently unveiled Europe’s largest regional launch of contactless payment systems on the Balearic Islands.
