A new application from Citi enables mobile network operators to accept top-up payments from customers through Facebook.

Emily Stern Arias, senior product manager for mobile payments, says that Citi's clients are looking for ways to interact and transact with their customers on social networking platforms.

"It's an amazing way to drive revenues in a very cost-effective manner," she comments in a video posted on YouTube. Using the white label app, customers visit their operator's page, click on the amount that they want to top-up and then choose a Facebook friend or another mobile user to make a payment.

Nick Nadgauda, head of global payments technology at Global Transaction Services, says: "The application will help our clients in two ways. On the one hand, it allows our true customers, the people we contract with, the mobile providers around the world, to efficiently get top-up flow into their channels. They are able to reach a broader group of people in the US and drive business into their pre-paid phone account platform. On the other hand, it also expands their reach into potential customers in the US or the other countries where origination happens."
