Intesa Sanpaolo has announced the complete migration of its core IT systems to Google Cloud through a collaboration with the hyperscaler and TIM (formerly Telecom Italia).
In all, the Italian banking group said it migrated more than 800 applications to Google Cloud infrastructure and decommissioned a further 800 on-premises applications run from the bank’s headquarters.
Intesa has leveraged Google Cloud’s Turin and Milan cloud regions, which are hosted by TIM data centres. TIM also provided end-to-end governance and FinOps throughout the migration process to manage risks and costs.
Massimo Proverbio, chief data, AI, and technology officer at Intesa Sanpaolo, said: “This initiative has allowed us to achieve all our 2022-2025 goals and prepare for the challenges of our 2026-2029 business plan.
“By partnering with Google Cloud and TIM, we changed technology, reduced costs and, at the same time, laid the foundations for building Isytech, the cloud-native digital technology platform serving customers and colleagues across our Group. In this transformative journey, we have also strengthened our internal skills and hired highly specialised new colleagues.”
Alongside the migration, Intesa trained more than 3,000 staff to adopt a “cloud-first culture,” and employees achieved 170 Google Cloud certifications.
Intesa first entered an agreement with Google Cloud and TIM in 2020 and began its migration of core applications soon after.
The announcement comes amid a busy period for Intesa, which has launched a €30.6 billion bid for Italy’s oldest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena and is reportedly exploring a bid for Spanish wealth manager Singular Bank.
