Google Cloud hires financial services VP

Google Cloud has appointed Derek White as vice president for global financial services.

A 20-year financial services technology veteran, he joins from the position of chief digital officer at US Bank, where he was chief digital officer. Prior to that he held similar senior digital roles at BBVA and Barclays.

White will be responsible for Google's strategy to gain market share in the competitive financial services cloud sector against major rivals Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

As previously reported, Google has been accelerating its financial services cloud partnership plan, striking deals with HSBC, Atom Bank and Refinitiv.

In March, Lloyds Banking Group also announced a five-year partnership with Google Cloud as part of its £3 billion digital transformation plans. This followed a strategic partnership with Temenos, building on earlier collaboration with several joint banking customers in Europe and Asia.

A statement explained that White will seek new partnerships with financial services firms to help "transform and redefine their core businesses into state-of-the-art digital operations".

White commented: "I look forward to bringing the power of the cloud to our financial services customers and partners around the world, furthering innovation, and creating digital experiences that their customers demand."

Earlier this summer, Google Cloud hired former Citi's FinTech chief executive Yolande Piazza to lead its North American financial services sales and customer engineering teams.
