An ATM that speaks cockney rhyming slang ...you're having a giraffe!

Strange but true, a cash machine operator, Bank Machine, is introducing five Automated Teller Machines in East London that speak cockney rhyming slang. The usual on screen prompts and options have been replaced, so that customers going to the independent non-LINK cash machines will now be asked to enter their Huckleberry Finn (PIN) and to select the amount of sausage and mash (Cash) that they wish to withdraw

The fun publicity gimmick will last for three months in East London and for those who don't 'speak' cockney, plain English is still available on the Bank Machine ATMs – indeed the rhyming slang option has to be selected to become active. Other phrases that customers can expect over the next quarter include speckled hen (£10) – although when this replaced an ayrton senna (tenner) i'm not quite sure – and rattle and tank (bank) will be heard if a transaction needs to be referred.

The rhyming slang ATMs no doubt caused much merriment over the August bank holiday weekend in the UK and there is the possibility of the experiment running for longer if it finds favour with the general public. I can't help thinking that the vendor missed a trick though in not getting Peggy Mitchell from the BBC's East Enders show to unveil the new ATMs; perhaps she couldn't get away from the ol' rub-a-dub-dub (pub).
