Two months on from its release, CommBank's Kaching app has been downloaded a total of 110,761 times. It enables customers to make peer-to-peer payments using a mobile phone number or email address and also extends this functionality to a user’s Facebook friends.
Writing on the bank's blog, Andy Lark, chief marketing and online officer, notes that over half of its 10 million customers currently own a smartphone. "The momentum this app has gained has been overwhelming, given we have taken a fairly soft approach to marketing it. While mobile to mobile payments have proved to be the most popular transfer method (85 per cent), what’s been surprising is the popularity of Facebook payments which are growing rapidly. Facebook is the second most popular transfer method with customers, accounting for more than 10 per cent of Kaching transfers," Lark says.
"While we knew Facebook would be an important feature to offer our customers, it’s an interesting growth area and indicates a distinct shift towards how Australians are seeking out new ways of making payments. It certainly broadens the mobile channels available and shows just how important it is to keep technology evolving for customers," he adds.
