Gov website taps Barclays Identity Service

The Barclays Identity Service is now available for all UK residents accessing government services and resources online through the GOV.UK Verify service. The secure identity verification system is for use by anyone accessing services such as viewing their driving licence or completing self-assessment tax returns.

GOV.UK Verify allows individuals to choose from nine companies certified as government digital service providers to prove and manage their identity. It is designed to make accessing government services faster and easier; removing the need for paper document-based verification of identity. It also effectively limits the amount of personal information held by any of the companies or by government systems.

After registration – for which individuals will need to provide a UK passport or driving licence, bank account details and the answers to questions only that person will know – log-in to the Barclays system will require a user name, password and mobile.

“Modern life is busy, so personal admin can often fall down the to-do list unless it can be undertaken easily, quickly and at a convenient time,” said Peter Simon, head of information at Barclays. “The Barclays Identity Service will help those looking to access government services do just this, allowing people to register an account without completing long forms or lengthy paperwork, or even leaving the house; and then log in through a quick and secure process.”
