9.20 - 9.30 Opening address & welcome:
Geoff Prudence (Conference Chairman)
Chair of CIBSE Facilities Management Group
Chair of BIFM Data Centre Network Group, Head of Facilities Management
Services,
Essex County Council

9.30 - 10.00 Session 1: The Green Grid Assessment of Energy
Efficiency in the Data Centre
Victor Smith, Enterprise Technologist
of Data Centre Infrastructure, virtualisation, server platforms at
Dell &
Jim Smith, Vice President of Engineering at Digital Realty Trust
The Green Grid is a global consortium of companies dedicated to advancing
energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems.
The Green Grid does not endorse any vendor-specific products or solutions,
and will seek to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices,
metrics and technologies that will improve overall data centre energy
efficiencies.
This session will provide attendees with an overview of The Green
Grid’s goals and objectives for developing meaningful, platform-neutral
standards, measurement methods, processes and new technologies to
improve the energy efficient performance of global data centres. Attendees
will receive information on assessing their data centre energy usage,
best practices in areas such as power and cooling and new technologies
which can help to improve their energy efficiency.
10.00 - 10.30 Session 2: The Green Data Centre: Is There
Such A Thing?
Dr. T. C. Tan, Systimax Solutions
At the heart of an organisation’s IT infrastructure
is the data centre. As the reliance on information access increases,
so too has the importance of the data centre. After all, your next
competitor is only a mouse-click away! The recent publications of the EPA report on ‘Server and Data
Centre Energy Efficiency’ in the US and the EU report on ‘Energy
Efficient Servers’ in Europe, compounded by the threat of global
warming and the pressure from various governments to reduce CO2 emissions
have placed ‘Green’ data centre at the forefront of many
IT organisation. TC will discuss the latest findings
10.30 - 11.00 Session 3: Benchmarking and Energy Efficiency
Liam Newcombe, Consultant, BCS
Liam will present the latest findings from the BCS’s Datacentre
Specialist Group concerning efficiency benchmarking, outlining the
independent methodology, and demonstrating how efficient decisions
can dramatically alter the energy consumption of the DC.
11.00 - 11.30 Morning Coffee
Power:
11.30- 12.00 Session 4: Infrastructure and Efficiency
Ken Hodge, Research & Development Manager,
Brand-Rex
Infrastructure is changing: the drive for ever faster network speeds,
higher efficiencies and lower lifecycle costs is continues unabated.
One of the most important aspects to consider is how to manage high
density, high performance cabling without impairing the efficiency
of the cooling systems. Looking at both copper and optical networks,
Ken will discuss the merits and issues.
12.00 - 12.30 Session 5: Power Controls
Andrew Gibson, Raritan
Power usuage only goes up - but what benefits is it bringing you? Adrew Gibson discusses the the problems facing the modern manager, and the practical benefits that can be applied by using information to make best use of what you have.
12.30 - 1.00 Session 6: Case Study: Borsa Italiana
Alessandro Pelosi, IT Director, Borsa
Italiana
ITo keep up with increasing trading volumes whilst containing high
energy costs, the Italian stock exchange, Borsa Italiana, has completely
overhauled its datacentres with the latest technology.
IIT director Alessandro Pelosi will being describing the challenges
he faced, the strategy the exchange decided upon, and the issues surrounding
its implementation. The result is a case study in how its TCO can
be reduced with a combination of lowering heat output and energy consumption,
increasing server density and system performance within the datacenters,
and increasing server cluster stability and reliability.
Alessandro will also be discussing some of the issues with the latest
integration of Borsa Italiana’s systems with those of the London
Stock Exchange following their decision to merge, and how the two
organisations are working together to ensure a smooth transistion.
1.00 - 2.00 Lunch
A buffet lunch and time to reflect on the morning sessions so far.
People:
2.00 - 2.30 Session 7: Making the Case
Professor Richard Ennals, Kingston Business
School
At this stage in the business and technology cycle, it is becoming
hard to secure investment commitments from the Finance Director. The
key is to “make him an offer he cannot refuse, but in a language
he can understand”. Finance Directors demand “Return On
Investment”, and they expect a case to be based on hard data.
The same challenge is faced by those seeking commitments to learning
and development, or to workplace health promotion. Soft benefits can
be hard or impossible to quantify, but they are none the less real.
2.30 - 3.00 Session 8: Physical management of a virtual infrastructure
Owen McKee, Country Manager for the UK
& Ireland, Avocent
Be it server, storage or software – virtualisation continues
to be very much the buzzword of the moment. However, unlike storage
and software virtualisation, the concept of server virtualisation
is still in the early adopter phase. Despite the clear benefits including
reduced outlay on hardware, decreased demands on power and cooling
and a more flexible allocation of processing capacity – take-up
of the consolidation technique has been slow to date.
3.00 - 3.30 Session 9: Case Study
Elliott Limb, Technology Partner, Barclays
The human side of running a major financial datacentre, the issues
that are involved, and how the team needs to be built.
3.30 - 4.00 Q&A Session:
4.00 - 4.15 Conference Summary:
The Chairman will summarise the day, and ask the audience for any
comments.
4 .15 Drinks Reception:
This is a chance
to discuss the day with your fellow professionals.
